Retire an old device safely

15 min · recommended
Why this matters. Old phones and computers still hold your accounts, photos and saved passwords, and old routers and cameras hold your Wi-Fi password. Erasing them before they leave the house means whoever gets them next gets nothing of yours.
1

Back up, then sign out

Make sure the backup is current. Then sign out of your accounts on the device and remove it from the maker's app (camera, doorbell and speaker apps have a "Remove device" option).

2

Erase it

iPhone/iPad: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Mac: System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Windows 11: Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC > Remove everything. Routers and cameras: hold the reset button (usually 10 seconds or more; check the manual).

Recycle it

Many electronics retailers take old devices for recycling, and many towns run e-waste drop-offs. Phones and computers often have trade-in value too.

4

Tell HomeOS

Tap "I replaced it" on your report. If the device ever shows up on your network again, HomeOS puts it back on the plan.

Check your understanding

What's left on an old router if you don't reset it?

Your Wi-Fi name and password, and sometimes your internet account details.
