Make your browser use the family filter too

10 min · extra
Why this matters. Some browsers have their own 'secure DNS' feature that can skip the router's DNS entirely. Firefox in the US often does this by default. Pointing the browser's secure DNS at Cloudflare's family address keeps the malware filter on, and encrypts your lookups as a bonus.

Chrome or Edge

Edge: Settings, then Privacy, search, and services, then Security, then Use secure DNS, then Choose a service provider.

Visit malware.testcategory.com in that browser. It shouldn't load.

Check your understanding

Why can a browser get around the router's filter?

Its own secure DNS feature can send lookups straight to a different service instead of the router.
