Install updates and keep Play Protect on

5 min · essential
Why this matters. Android gets security fixes two ways: system updates from your phone's maker and Google Play system updates from Google. Play Protect is Android's built-in malware scanner: it checks apps when you install them and scans your phone regularly. Phones stop getting updates after a few years, so check how long yours is supported.
1

Install system updates

Open Settings and search for 'Software update' or 'System update' (the exact place varies by maker). Install anything offered and restart.

2

Check Play Protect

Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Play Protect, then the gear icon. Make sure Scan apps with Play Protect is on.

Stick to the Play Store

Avoid installing apps from websites or links in messages ('sideloading'). That's how most Android malware arrives.
